There are a few ways to get Twitter to work for you. Below are some of the main ones.

Engage

Engaging with people on Twitter helps you start a relationship with them. Their followers also get to know about you. You keep doing this and your influence grows.

To engage effectively, make lists of those that your audience follows, your peers, and your fans. Engage with them and deepn the relationship over time.

You will be set up for solid growth and lasting relationships if you master replying, DMing, and understand the relevant best practices.

Getting Attention

Having inbound attention is the holy grail on Twitter. It unfortuantely is challenging to make it happen when needed.

Doing it well means, mastering hooks, spiky points of view and reach content. Once that happens convert the engagement to DMs.

A common difficulty of this approach is content that attracts followers often does not result in engaged followers or conversions to paid services.

The benefit of this approach is that gained followers are easier to build relationships with systematically (vs reaching out to people cold).

Going Outbound

Reaching out allows you to accelerate finding customers for your business. The hard part of the approach is that it can take a lot of effort and often has mixed results.

At it core, going outbound involves spending an hour every day on: finding prospects on Twitter, driving cold DMs to appointments, and closing on calls.

Taking this approach means knowing how to target your audience even if their bios don’t have the right keywords, mastering cold DMs that have high response rates, and understanding frame control in DMs.

This approach - by building on cold DMs - works best when you have clarity on where you can provide value, i.e. using it means it is hard to iterate on on your offer.

Blending approaches

The most robust strategy is to intelligently leverage the different approaches. This usually means knowing when and how to focus on them.

Twitter is a social platform and prioritizing that first helps the most. Support influencers by replying to them and a targeted audience finds you. This approach is needed if you want your content seen by more readers, and is the only effort that can predictably drive follower growth.

The second approach that matters is building a reputation. Social platforms supercharge trust and help with word of mouth attention. Sharing insights and your journey help you get that attention that you can monetize over time.

With a growing set of followers and a muscle for growing your reputation, what matters next is going outbound. Reaching out allows you to accelerate connecting with ideal customers, and when done after the basics allows to have a significantly higher ROI on the effort.
